FOSSEE, IIT Bombay, organizes the first Industry-Academia Interaction to foster the Research & Development and Learning of Computation Fluid Dynamics (CFD) using OpenFOAM. This is is an endeavour to synergize the ongoing developments in the field of CFD in academics as well as in the corporate sector. This interaction will help FOSSEE to train the CFD enthusiasts to increase their job potential. It will also help the corporate section to augment their R&D effort and access to well-trained potential employees. The Academia will also be benefitted by connecting their research to the problems that the CFD industry is focusing on at present.

FOSSEE, IIT Bombay, offered a free Online Workshop on the Basics of OpenFOAM, for all CFD enthusiasts on 18th March 2025.

The Faculty Development Program was organised in June 2025 to impart knowledge to the faculty members to solve CFD problems while understanding the intricacies involved in simulations through a robust at the same time easy to use CFD tool box- OpenFOAM.

At the end of this workshop, participants learnt-

  • how to set up, view the files and run a case in OpenFOAM 
  • to become familiar with pre-processing tools and will be able to generate mesh, set the boundary & initial conditions, learn simulation control etc.
  • how to plot and visualise the results in ParaView.
  • how to use a turbulence model in a simulation and to compare the results from a simulation using different turbulence models.
  • how to apply higher-order numerical schemes in CFD simulations.
  • to simulate multiphase flows.
  • about Dynamic meshing.
  • to add a scalar transport equation in a solver.

The Faculty members who attended the program was benefitted by-

  • Learning fundamentals of CFD using OpenFOAM 
  • Learning to simulate problem in OpenFOAM 
  • Learning essentials of post-processing 
  • Receiving certificate for attending the 4 day OpenFOAM learning program

The Industry Readiness Workshop on CFD was conducted during 11-14 Nov 2025 in online mode by FOSSEE, IIT Bombay. More than 1800 CFD enthusiasts showed interest to attend the workshop and hundreds of learners were benefited by the 8 sessions conducted during the 4 Day workshop. The  participants were introduced to the ongoing problems that are dealt with in the CFD industry by the Advisory Board Members of the CFD FOSSEE team. They attended multiple demonstration sessions referred from the Case Study Project of CFD FOSSEE that followed
 the corporate lectures. The Case Studies demonstrated during the workshop were relevant to the topic on which the Advisory Board Members lectured, resulting in an amazing synchrony of a virtual industry visit and academic reference.
